Support Family Support Services

Sunburst Projects provides comprehensive culturally sensitive HIV/AIDS family services to Sacramento, Placer, El Dorado, and Sonoma Counties.

What are Family Support Services?
Sunburst Projects aims to fill a gap in family preservation HIV/AIDS services. All services respond to the family as a unit, build on family strengths, and help prevent crisis by addressing the needs of families early. Family Support Services offer a range of services to help parents cope with the stresses of daily life. These services include:
  • Direct work with children/teens including anger management, therapeutic play, self-esteem, and social skills building
  • Offering parents new information and skills pertaining to parenting and child development
  • Reducing isolation many parents feel by bringing them into contact with other parents in similar situations
  • In-home family-centered case management that provides assistance with household management including finance and budgeting, nutrition and healthy eating, and safety in the home
  • Advocacy and linkage of families to other community support services that help address their basic needs, ideally before they intensify and reach crisis proportions
  • Support to other caregivers including extended family and foster family care
  • Advocacy and information regarding the Children with Disability Acts Programs

Family Centered Case Management
Enhances the quality of life of agency clients by helping them overcome barriers that limit their access to essential medical treatment and other care and support services in the community.

Mental Health Support Services
Support groups and counseling services keep clients current about the many issues surrounding HIV/AIDS and help them with crucial personal concerns such as grief, death and dying, drug abuse, disclosure, discrimination, and the possibility of child placement.

Support groups for HIV+ families, women, children, and teens meet once a week. For times and place please call the specific office located nearest to you.

Respite Childcare
Offers emergency vouchers for childcare needs in order for parents to attend to their own healthcare and/or family emergencies. The Buddy/Respite Program provides an option to parents for a volunteer buddy who will commit to four hours of respite childcare services per week.

Camp Sunburst
Serving all of Northern California, our national model residential summer camp program for HIV/AIDS impacted children, teens, and their families fosters problem solving and healing. It also focuses on the individualized needs of each family member.

Parent, youth, and family activities include camp activities such as arts and crafts and swimming, but components specific to the needs of Sunburst Projects’ clients (for example, personal and parenting efficacy, communication, and social skills) are primary goals during each camp session as well. (To see current dates, click on: Camp Schedule.)

Teen Services
Teen Services include therapeutic activities that educate teens about the importance of drug adherence, safer sex, and avoidance of risky behaviors as they transition into healthy young adults. Through workshops and support groups, teens are also equipped with leadership and communication skills that empower them to make healthy choices.

HIV Education and Prevention
Offers “Prevention for Positives Programs” designed to improve adherence to HIV therapeutic regimes. Women and youth living with HIV/AIDS are available to help educate the community by sharing their personal stories.

Sunburst Projects attends community health fairs and forums to increase awareness about families and HIV. Sunburst Projects helped organize the first Sonoma County community health fair in honor of National Latino AIDS Awareness Day in 2005.

Sunburst Projects conducts interactive HIV prevention and healthy sexuality workshops in schools and other settings including Drug Abuse Alternatives Center (DAAC) of Sonoma County.

If you are interested in having someone come speak for a community event please call us at 707-588-9477.
